ESPN.com’s Miami Dolphins page continues its series on providing scouting reports for the 2014 rookie class. On Friday we take a look at Dolphins fourth-round pick and defensive back Walt Aikens, who will add depth at cornerback and could add value to special teams.
Here is a scouting report on Aikens from Scouts Inc.:
“Strong eyes and awareness in zone coverage. Does a nice job of marking targets coming in and out of his area. Average anticipation and route-recognition skills in man coverage. Makes quick diagnosis against the run. ... Feet are quicker than hips. Has some tightness in off-man coverage. At his best utilizing press technique where he can use his size, length and strength to his advantage. Also fits well in a heavy Cover 2 scheme.”
Aikens is one of five Dolphins draft picks who played at a small school (Liberty). He also became the first player drafted this year who was not invited to the NFL combine last February.
Can Aikens make the immediate jump to the NFL level? We will find out this summer during organized team activities, minicamp and training camp.
