Ron Jaworski ranks Ryan Tannehill No. 23

This is the time of year when preseason rankings are everywhere. There are plenty of team rankings, player rankings, fantasy rankings and 53-man roster projections for all 32 teams.

However, ESPN NFL analyst Ron Jaworski's annual quarterback rankings are definitely worth noting. Jaworski is a former NFL quarterback who studies the position regularly. He knows his stuff.

Jaworski ranks Tannehill as the No. 23 quarterback in the league heading into the 2014 season. There are only nine starting quarterbacks "Jaws" ranked Tannehill ahead of, which is not good enough. Other mid-level quarterbacks such as such as Andy Dalton of the Cincinnati Bengals and Nick Foles of the Philadelphia Eagles were rated higher.

According to Jaworski, Tannehill has the potential to become a top-10 quarterback. That is high praise. However, Tannehill hasn’t been able to put it all together in two seasons, where he’s just 15-17 as a starter. This is a crucial third season for Tannehill to produce behind a new offensive line and a new offensive coordinator.

Tannehill was up-and-down during organized team activities and minicamp. There will be growing pains for the third-year quarterback with all the changes. But the Dolphins hope those adjustments will be complete in time for the regular season.

The biggest requirement for a starting quarterback is to win games. Tannehill hasn't done enough of that. But if he wins with regularity this season and lead the Dolphins to their first playoff berth since 2008, his long-term outlook in Miami immediately changes. If not, Miami could bring in quarterback competition for Tannehill in 2015.
