Resetting Miami Dolphins' 2015 draft picks

The Miami Dolphins made a shrewd trade Friday to land dynamic receiver Kenny Stills from the New Orleans Saints. Miami gave up veteran linebacker Dannell Ellerbe and a third-round pick in the trade.

Ellerbe was expendable after the development of replacement linebacker Jelani Jenkins last season. However, Miami will miss the third-round pick the most.

Let’s reset the Dolphins’ 2015 draft picks following the Stills-Ellerbe trade:

  • Round 1: No. 14 overall

  • Round 2

  • Round 4

  • Round 5

  • Round 6

  • Round 7 (conditional pick from 49ers)

The Dolphins now have six picks in this year’s NFL draft. We won’t know the exact overall pick beyond the first round until the compensatory selections are announced later this month at the NFL owners meetings.

Miami lost its original seventh-round pick to the Baltimore Ravens. But the Dolphins gained a seventh-round pick from the 49ers in last year’s trade for offensive tackle Jonathan Martin.

This draft will be very important for Miami to fill holes after spending a lot of money thus far in free agency. The Dolphins, for example, spent $114 million to land Pro Bowl defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh in free agency.
