Marcus Sherels named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- After he returned his third career punt for a touchdown on Sunday in Chicago and set a Minnesota Vikings team record for punt-return TDs, the Vikings' Marcus Sherels was named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week on Wednesday.

Sherels' 65-yard return in the first quarter gave the Vikings a 7-3 lead. It was the team's only touchdown until Teddy Bridgewater connected with Stefon Diggs for a 40-yard score with 1:54 left.

The return also helped Sherels set a team record with five career punt returns of longer than 50 yards, and his career punt return average of 10.6 yards is also the best in Vikings history.

Sherels' award marks the seventh NFC Special Teams Player of the Week selection for the Vikings since 2012. Kicker Blair Walsh -- who hit the game-winning field goal on Sunday -- has won the award four times. Cordarrelle Patterson won the award in 2013 and Adam Thielen in 2014.
