The Baltimore Orioles have "definite interest" in Jason Vargas and Andrew Cashner as they look to plug multiple holes in their starting rotation, reports Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com.
Baltimore starters ranked dead last in the major leagues with a 5.70 ERA, and Kevin Gausman and Dylan Bundy are the only pitchers assured a rotation spot in 2018.
Kubatko notes the Orioles have had previous interest in Vargas, the 34-year-old left-hander who won a league-high 18 games for the Kansas City Royals with a 4.16 ERA last season.
The 31-year-old Cashner had a 3.40 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP in 28 starts for the Texas Rangers. The right-hander's fastball velocity has declined each of the past two years.
Cashner and Vargas rank 35th and 36th, respectively, on Keith Law's list of top free agents. Both pitchers are more affordable options in a class of free-agent starters topped by Yu Darvish and Jake Arrieta.
