Avril Lavigne Releases "Fly" To Benefit Special Olympics

Avril Lavigne’s new and inspirational single “Fly” is one of the official songs for this year’s Special Olympics World Games. With the Special Olympics around the corner, ESPN Music got the chance to talk with Avril about her new song. When asked why she chose to work with this community, Avril told us:

“The [Special Olympics] have a similar mission as The Avril Lavigne Foundation. Working with kids that have disabilities is something really close to my heart. So they were the perfect partner.”

The Avril Lavigne Foundation started in early 2010. Its mission is to raise awareness and give support to children living with serious illnesses and disabilities. Proceeds from "Fly" and other related merchandise are being donated to the Special Olympics.

Avril told ESPN Music about the inspiration to write this song:

“I just really wanted people to feel uplifted and to reach up and have courage in their dreams and help them find inner strength. I wanted to inspire people. My fans really inspire me. Seeing these kids, it’s really amazing.”

"Fly" can be heard throughout ESPN programming as we feature athletes and highlight the faces and joyful reactions of the competing athletes. There has been a warm reception to the song, with the Special Olympics community embracing its encouraging message and anthemic sound. Avril is among several artists showing their support through music. Other acts involved in the Special Olympics World Games include O.A.R., Cody Simpson, and R5.

Avril has waited some time for this, stating:

“I was so amped on Fly and partnering with the Special Olympics. For me this is something I’ve planned over a year ago and it’s finally just happening now so I’m really happy about that.”

As the Special Olympic World Games kick off on July 25th we wish the competitors the best of luck, and nothing but success to The Avril Lavigne Foundation’s future endeavors helping to create a better world.

"Fly" is now available on iTunes and can be heard on ESPN throughout coverage of the Special Olympics World Games.

All merchandise related to "Fly" can be found by visiting The Avril Lavigne Foundation.
