Three-point stance: scholar-athletes, Stull, OSU

  1. Tired of college football’s bad news? Here comes the good. Among the Campbell Trophy finalists, the best scholars who also are outstanding football players, are quarterbacks Tim Tebow of Florida, Colt McCoy of Texas and Todd Reesing of Kansas, receiver Eric Decker of Minnesota and linebacker Joe Pawelek of Baylor. They and 11 others with GPAs of 3.33 to 4.0 each receive $18,000 postgraduate scholarships. The Campbell winner will be announced in December.

  2. No one is more impressed with Pitt quarterback Bill Stull than Panther coach Dave Wannstedt. The one-two offensive punch of Stull and freshman tailback Dion Lewis has led the Panthers to a 6-1 record and a No. 15 ranking. Wannstedt, who will appear on the ESPNU College Football Podcast on Friday, said he made Stull earn the job last spring and wasn’t sure he would step up. Boy, has he -- Stull is third in passing efficiency with a 16:4 TD-pick ratio and a 161.09 rating.

  3. Can No. 14 Oklahoma State upset No. 3 Texas in Stillwater? Consider that since the loss to Houston, the Cowboys’ FBS opponents include 0-8 Rice and three Big 12 teams (Missouri, Texas A&M, Baylor) with a collective league record of 1-8. Yes, Zac Robinson has outplayed Colt McCoy. Robinson is the real deal. I’m just not convinced his opposition has been. The Longhorns defense he’ll see is the real deal, too.
