Ohio State wasn't always the football powerhouse that it is today. And on Saturday at Ohio Stadium against Nebraska (8 p.m. ET, ABC), the Buckeyes will pay tribute to a team that paved the way for those that came after it.
These uniforms will mirror those of the 1916 Buckeyes, the first undefeated team in school history, who were led by the school's first All-American, Chic Harley. They're calling the look "music and cannon fire" because author James Thurber famously described Harley's running style "a cross between music and cannon fire, and it brought your heart up under your ears."
The "cannonball dust" detail on the helmet is especially impressive.
Elsewhere, two themes have taken hold of the uniform world this weekend. The first is a gray trend highlighted by Arkansas' unveiling a new "anthracite" alternate with chrome helmets when it hosts Florida on Saturday.
Similarly, Northwestern will wear a new "graphite" alternate as it tries to upset No. 8 Wisconsin in Evanston, Illinois, on Saturday (noon ET, ABC).
Just as Oregon State celebrated the upcoming 75th anniversary of its unconventional Rose Bowl bid last week with new helmets commemorating World War II veterans, Duke will do the same on Saturday when it hosts No. 19 Virginia Tech (3:30 p.m. ET, ESPNU). The Blue Devils will pair their black jerseys with a "battleship gray" helmet and "a logo used by the 88th Infantry Division of the United States Army that held the nickname 'Blue Devils' during World War II."
NC State will join the gray party by bringing back its Iron Wolf alternate when it hosts No. 22 Florida State on Saturday (7 p.m. ET, ESPNU)
Several teams and outfitters are using Saturday to display military appreciation gear with Veterans Day on Friday. Cincinnati will have elements of the American flag present throughout its look when it hosts BYU.
Clemson will bring back its all-purple alternate (a nod to the Purple Heart) when the No. 2 Tigers host Syracuse on Saturday (3:30 p.m. ET ABC/ESPN2).
Adidas constructed similar black military appreciation uniforms for Mississippi State and Louisville. The Bulldogs will wear theirs on Saturday when they try to upset the No. 4 Texas A&M Aggies (noon ET, SECN).
