TCU defensive end Jerry Hughes has been named one of five finalists for the Bronco Nagurski Award, which is handed out annually to the nation’s best defensive player.
Iowa linebacker Pat Angerer, Tennessee strong safety Eric Berry, Alabama defensive tackle Terrence Cody and Nebraska defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh also were named finalists.
This is the second straight season Hughes has been a finalist for the award.
Hughes is also one of four finalists for the Rotary Lombardi Award and one of 10 finalists for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. He is a semifinalist for the Lott Trophy and Chuck Bednarik Award. And he is one of just three defensive players to be named a "Player to Watch" for the Walter Camp Football Foundation's 2009 Player of the Year award.
Hughes has 49 tackles, 13 tackles loss, 10.5 sacks, one pass break-up, six quarterback hurries and one forced fumble this season. He has helped TCU rank fourth in the country in total defense and sixth in the country in rush and pass defense.
