LSU-West Virginia pregame ponderables

BATON ROUGE, La. -- Greetings from Death Valley, and let's get to the big news first.

West Virginia's Brandon Hogan will start at cornerback. It was just two weeks ago that Hogan was arrested for a DUI and suspended indefinitely. Now he's starting. Bill Stewart is risking some public relations hits with this move, but there's no question it helps the team. Hogan is the best cover corner the Mountaineers have, and this tightens a defense that might have had a weak spot with sophomore Pat Miller making his first road start.

Word is that defensive end Julian Miller will play as well, but he will likely be limited. Look for a lot of Bruce Irvin in this game.

It rained here earlier, but it was mostly just a drizzle. Skies are cloudy now, and the temperature will be about 80 degrees at halftime. There is still a chance for more rain.

Fans are starting to fill in -- the student section was almost full an hour ago -- and this should be a rowdy atmosphere. As rowdy as it gets in college football.

West Virginia is the Big East's bell cow right now. Can the Mountaineers deliver a signature win for the league, and more importantly, for themselves?
