Wilson has promising visit to Wisconsin

Russell Wilson's visit to Wisconsin is in the books, and by all accounts, it was a very good one.

Sources said the ex-NC State quarterback enjoyed his time in Madison and came away impressed with the Wisconsin program. Despite some buzz on Twitter that Wilson had committed to Wisconsin, no decision has been made.

A source tells colleague Joe Schad that Wilson should make a decision soon on his college football destination. Wilson is deciding between Wisconsin and Auburn after visiting both schools. Although he continues to play minor league baseball in the Colorado Rockies organization, all signs point to him returning to the gridiron this fall.

Because Wilson has graduated from NC State, he has the chance to transfer to another FBS institution and play immediately.

More details on Wilson's visit to Wisconsin from the Wisconsin State Journal:

Wilson arrived in Madison on Tuesday and finished up his visit prior to 4 p.m. on Wednesday.

"It was a home run -- a grand slam in baseball terms," a UW source said about the visit. ...

The source said Wilson spent considerable time with offensive coordinator Paul Chryst, learning about the team's offense, as well as with the players.

It didn't hurt that Wilson, who has played his career at a warm-weather school, came to Madison during a brief heat wave.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Tuesday that Wisconsin has emerged as the leader for Wilson's services, according to a source.

If I had to put a wager on it, I'd say Wilson ends up as a Badger in 2011. He should fit well in Wisconsin's pro-style offense, and the opportunity to work under Chryst, one of the nation's top offensive coordinators, has to be appealing.

A lot of folks think Wisconsin becomes the Big Ten favorite if it lands Wilson, especially after what has gone down in Columbus the past few days. While I'd caution against placing expectations too high -- Wilson will have to learn the system fast and compete with projected starter Jon Budmayr -- Wisconsin needs depth at quarterback and Wilson would help in that area.

Badgers fans are anxiously awaiting a decision, and we should know soon where Wilson ends up this fall.
