Houston signee McElroy chooses baseball

Incoming Houston freshman C.J. McElroy has opted to play baseball after being drafted in the third round by the St. Louis Cardinals last month.

Houston coach Kevin Sumlin said in a statement Tuesday: "We have learned from the McElroy family that C.J. will be signing a contract to play professional baseball full time with the St. Louis Cardinals. He is a very talented young man and we wish him all the best.”

McElroy played running back and receiver at Clear Creek High in Texas, and he also played baseball. He told The Houston Chronicle last month he loved baseball and it has always been his first sport. His father, Chuck, played Major League Baseball for 13 seasons.
