Tech QB Patrick Mahomes leaves after landing hard on shoulder

Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes II, on pace before before Thursday to break the NCAA single-season passing record, left Thursday night in the third quarter against Kansas with an injury.

Mahomes landed hard on his throwing shoulder after a 32-yard run when tackled by Jayhawks Fish Smithson and Isaiah Bean. Trainers tended to Mahomes on the field. He was examined on the sideline and left for the locker room as backup Nic Shimonek took over for the Red Raiders.

Through three games, Mahomes completed 71.2 percent of his passes for 1,493 yards -- a nation-leading 497.7-yard average. His 14 touchdowns ranked second nationally.

Before the injury on Thursday against Kansas, the 6-foot-3, 230-pound junior was 27 of 34 for 277 yards with four touchdowns and one interception while leading Tech to a 27-19 lead. He was sacked three times.

Shimonek directed the Red Raiders to scores on his first two possessions.
