Credit NC State coach Dave Doeren for knowing how to close a comedy routine.
The Wolfpack met during fall camp to get a few laughs by comparing photos of players to those of their celebrity lookalikes on the room's projection screen, with O-linemen Philip Walton and Joe Scelfo, corner Niles Clark and strength and conditioning coach Dantonio Burnette getting roasted. But Doeren followed that up with a far more emotional moment, posting photos of walk-ons Clark Eyers, Ford Howell and Josh Taylor on the big screen.
Rather than offering a joke at their expense, Doeren announced that he was putting all three on scholarship, and the team responded with a rousing celebration.
“I’m really proud of these three guys, and it’s fun as a head coach,” Doeren told his players. “And I hope you get the thrill, in whatever you choose to do someday, giving somebody something they’ve earned. That’s the greatest thing you can do.”
Eyers, Howell and Taylor are the most recent of 13 walk-ons who have earned a scholarship under Doeren at NC State.
