Despite consecutive blowout losses, West Virginia received a commitment Monday from four-star inside linebacker Al-Rasheed Benton (Newark, N.J./Malcolm X. Shabazz), multiple sources report.
Benton made an official visit to Morgantown during the weekend of Sep. 28th for the Mountaineers' back-and-forth 70-63 shootout victory over Baylor. He was recruited by West Virginia quarterbacks coach Jake Spavital.
Arizona State, Boston College, Kansas, Maryland, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Temple and Toledo also extended scholarship offers to the 6-foot-2, 230-pound defender. Georgia Tech and Rutgers were among the other programs showing interest.
Benton, who has slipped under-the-radar, is considered the nation's 16th best ILB according to ESPN. His evaluation states: "Benton has cat-like quickness and shows the ability to create havoc in the opponent's backfield whether defending the run or rushing the passer."
With Benton on board, West Virginia's top three pledges for 2013 are from linebackers.
