ESPN 300 WR Davidson makes choice

Four-star wide receiver Shaq Davidson (Gaffney, S.C./Gaffney) announced his decision on Tuesday, committing to play for the in-state Gamecocks over Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, and several other BCS offers.

“I am committed to South Carolina,” Davidson said. “It feels great to be a Gamecock!”

The 6-foot, 170-pound wideout took visits this spring to Auburn, Georgia, North Carolina, as well as several trips to Columbia, S.C. In the end, the No. 140 prospect in the ESPN 300 felt most comfortable at South Carolina.

“I love the coaching staff down there,” Davidson said. “They are very welcoming and make me feel at home plus the atmosphere down there is great. They are building something special at South Carolina and I would love to be a part of all that.”

Last year Davidson played six games at receiver, with 24 catches for 340 yards and two touchdowns before being moved to quarterback. The Indians went on to win nine straight games and the AAAA championship. Davidson threw for 901 yards and nine touchdowns while rushing for 598 yards and seven touchdowns in those contests. As a sophomore Davidson had 29 catches for 698 yards and eight touchdowns in a season cut in half due to a torn ACL.

The addition of Davidson, the No. 3 prospect in South Carolina, gives the Gamecocks nine commitments for the 2014 class, including six from in-state recruits and three from Georgia. Four of their commitments are in the ESPN 300.
