Reed clears waivers, becomes free agent

Former Texans safety Ed Reed cleared waivers on Wednesday and is now a free agent, according to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

The move doesn't come as a major surprise, as a team that claimed Reed would have to absorb his current contract and would be on the hook for up to nearly $1.7 million for the rest of this season, as previously broken down here.

Should a team be interested in signing Reed at this point, it would be able to negotiate a new contract with the former All-Pro.

The Patriots have become a hot topic of discussion as a potential landing spot for Reed given the high praise Bill Belichick has shared for him as a player in previous years, as well as the potential need to add a secondary piece while Steve Gregory recovers from a thumb injury.
