Super Bowl ratings from Boston view

Fox touted today that Super Bowl XLVIII was most watched show ever with 111.5 million viewers.

For some local-based perspective, the game did a 50.7 rating in the Boston market. Those who chronicle and analyze ratings agree that is a strong number, especially for a game featuring two "neutral" teams in Denver and Seattle.

While that didn't rank in the top 10 television markets nationally, according to Sports Illustrated media critic Richard Deitsch, the number is a good one to work with when comparing Boston-based viewing interest between football and baseball.

For example, the average rating for last year's World Series matchup between the Red Sox and Cardinals was 39.6. The low mark in the World Series was a 32.4 in Game 3 while the high mark was a 55.2 in the deciding Game 6.

For those who like to debate which is more popular in Boston -- football or baseball -- these numbers help fuel the discussion.
