Saints promoting practice squad QB Griffin

The New Orleans Saints will promote rookie quarterback Ryan Griffin from the practice squad to the active roster today, according to a league source, as was first reported by ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter. The Saints wanted to protect Griffin from being signed away by another quarterback-needy team in the wake of injuries around the league.

It’s unclear who will be released to make room for Griffin. If the transaction becomes official today, it will be released after 5 p.m. ET.

Presumably, Griffin will remain the Saints’ No. 3 option at quarterback behind veterans Drew Brees and Luke McCown. But Tuesday’s move is a sign of how much they value his potential. Griffin (6-foot-5, 206 pounds), played college ball in New Orleans at Tulane. And he played his senior year under former Saints receivers coach Curtis Johnson, running a similar offense.

Griffin had a solid preseason performance, completing 32 of 59 passes for 380 yards, with two touchdowns and one interception.

UPDATE: According to Yahoo! Sports, the St. Louis Rams were the team that attempted to sign Griffin before the Saints convinced him to stay in New Orleans.
