Saints waive former Packers QB Joe Callahan

The New Orleans Saints waived rookie quarterback Joe Callahan on Saturday, just one week after they claimed him off waivers from the Green Bay Packers. They filled the spot by promoting defensive end Chris McCain from the practice squad.

It’s possible the Saints may try to re-sign Callahan to their practice squad if he isn’t claimed by another team. But if Callahan goes unclaimed, he would be free to sign with any practice squad he wants -- which could lead to a return to Green Bay, if invited.

The Saints didn’t have much time to work with the undrafted rookie from Division III Wesley College, who turned heads with a terrific preseason performance in Green Bay. But it appears as though they didn’t have the luxury of keeping him on their 53-man roster because of injuries.

The Saints ruled six injured players out of Sunday’s game at the Kansas City Chiefs.
