No word yet if Drew Brees, Adrian Peterson will play Thursday

METAIRIE, La. – The Cleveland Browns named Brock Osweiler as their starter for Thursday’s preseason opener against the New Orleans Saints.

But the Saints -- who don't have any sort of starting quarterback competition to worry about -- haven't named theirs yet.

Sean Payton said the team has not yet determined everyone's playing time for Thursday's game. He was non-committal when specifically asked whether Drew Brees and Adrian Peterson will play.

"We'll see," Payton said. "I think we've gotta be smart and understand what the main goal of it is. But we really haven't sat down to finalize how we want to handle this game."

Peterson hasn't played in a preseason game since 2013 and hasn't actually run the ball in a preseason game since 2011. But he said over the weekend that, "Maybe I'm itching a little more this offseason" since he's with a new team and still learning a new offense.

Brees played just three snaps in last year's preseason opener at the New England Patriots -- completing his only pass for 37 yards to Brandin Cooks, which was enough to call it a night. Before that, he didn't play in the 2014 or 2015 preseason openers (because of an oblique injury in 2014). But before that, he often played in the first preseason game, including the full first quarter in 2013.

"I do whatever Sean Payton decides in regards to the playing time and the objective," Brees said. "I'm always ready to play, it's just up to Sean and the coaches."
