Where the Saints rank: Playoff edition

The New Orleans Saints (11-5) finished fourth in the NFL in both offensive and defensive yards -- completing their remarkable defensive turnaround.

Last year, the Saints set the NFL record for most yards allowed in a season (440.1 per game). This year, they dropped that down to 305.7. They also dropped from 28.4 points allowed per game to 19.0 (which also ranked fourth best in the NFL).

“There are a handful of (reasons),” coach Sean Payton said after the Saints’ Week 17 victory over Tampa Bay. “I thought getting (defensive coordinator Rob Ryan) in here and bringing that change and that enthusiasm, and the rest of the coaches on that side of the ball. We had a few pieces that we were able to add. ... And there is an ownership to it where the players are believing in what they are doing, feel good about what they are doing. And I think that is a part of teaching. …

“That success and confidence can be contagious. It can go the other way, but I think Rob and his staff have done a great job on defense. We still have work to do, but that’s encouraging.”
