Cooks learning Saints offense 'online'

METAIRIE, La. -- The New Orleans Saints will finally get their first-round draft pick back this weekend.

With Oregon State's academic year coming to a close, receiver Brandin Cooks will rejoin the Saints this weekend and participate in the Saints' final four organized team activities (OTAs) next week, according to coach Sean Payton.

Luckily for the Saints, Cooks shouldn't be too far behind, despite the NFL rule that prevents rookies from certain schools from participating in early-summer camps.

Cooks played in a sophisticated pro-style offense under Mike Riley at Oregon State. And he got introduced to the Saints' playbook and schemes during a three-day rookie minicamp last month.

Plus, the Saints have been allowed to keep teaching him through some "online courses" in the meantime.

"What we've done is set aside an hour, hour-and-a-half each night and go online basically with him and have him go through the tape with our coach," Payton said. "We'll go through practice tape and go through the installation .... He was able to take the [play]book back with him and kind of work through page by page. Like today for instance, Day 3 installation at minicamp ...

"So he'll be in this weekend and he'll be here Monday kind of getting caught up to speed as quickly as possible."

After next week, the Saints will break until they report to training camp at The Greenbrier resort in West Virginia on July 24.
