Cut day is here

The New York Giants have begun to inform players that they have been released as teams have to cut their rosters down to 53 on Saturday.

While the official cuts won’t be announced until 6 p.m., reports have been coming in of players who have been released.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that former Rutgers standout WR Tim Brown and fifth-string RB Gartrell Johnson have been cut.

The Newark Star Ledger is reporting that QB Rhett Bomar, DT Jay Alford and WR Derek Hagan will be released according to sources. It appears that not only was Bomar unable to make the Giants believe that he could be the No. 2 QB but he became expendable after the trade for Sage Rosenfels .

WR Victor Cruz in all likelihood will be on the final roster, especially if Hagan is released. Cruz's mother said the rookie had heard nothing from the team as of 4:30 so no news is likely good news. WR Duke Calhoun also may have made the final roster after his exciting touchdown catch and run against the Patriots on Thursday.

Here is a list of some of the names of Giants being released according to various reports. We will update as day goes on.

QB Rhett Bomar - Giants may just go with two quarterbacks and hope to bring Bomar back to practice squad if he clears waivers. Our guess is he doesn't.

DT Jay Alford - Rocky Bernard's impressive play in the last couple of weeks of camp hurt Alford, who missed all of last season with a knee injury.

WR Derek Hagan - Another somewhat surprising move considering the ultra-dependable receiver was also a special teams contributor.

WR Tim Brown – Expendable after trade for returner Darius Reynaud. Rutgers star has a shot at practice team.

RB Gartrell Johnson - This likely means RB D.J. Ware has made the roster, especially with his ability to return kickoffs. Johnson could return to practice squad if not claimed.

TE Bear Pascoe – Somewhat surprising move since he impressed in camp and now Giants are down to two TEs in Kevin Boss and Travis Beckum, who should be back this week from neck injury.
