The NFL released the preseason schedule on Thursday. Not all dates and times have been announced, but here’s a first look at the opponents for the New York Giants:
Week 1 (Aug. 12) vs. Miami Dolphins
Comment: For the first time in his career, Olivier Vernon will be allowed to hit Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill. No idea how the former Dolphins pass-rusher feels about the current Dolphins quarterback, but every other time he's gone against him, Tannehill was wearing a red practice jersey. Now with the Giants as the headline free-agent pass-rusher, Vernon will get a chance to pursue Tannehill in anger.
Week 2 (Aug. 18-21) at Buffalo Bills
Comment: The Giants just can't shake Rex Ryan. They had to play him every year in the preseason when he coached the Jets, played him last year in the regular season and now here he is again, with their old nemesis LeSean McCoy toting the rock. Lots of flashback opportunities here for any Giants long-timers who may want to take a short trip down memory lane.
Week 3 (Aug. 27) at New York Jets
Comment: The annual Snoopy Bowl! There's an actual trophy that goes to the winner of this game, courtesy of stadium sponsor MetLife. And yes, it has Snoopy on it. But the real prize for the Giants is that this is a "road" game in their home stadium, meaning one less August road trip to worry about.
Week 4 (Sept. 1) vs. New England Patriots
Comment: Last year, the story around the annual Giants-Patriots preseason finale was whether Tom Brady would be suspended for the first four games of the regular season. Heck, that could be the story again, depending on the pace of the appeals process. But from the Giants' standpoint, the question will be whether new coach Ben McAdoo makes his starters play in the final preseason game as Tom Coughlin sometimes did when he got mad at them.
