Rex Ryan said Monday that wide receiver Santonio Holmes was not benched for a series after fumbling the ball in the first quarter. Holmes sat for the next drive in the loss to Chicago, but the Jets coach said it wasn't a penalty.
“We never pulled him because of the fumble," Ryan said. "Obviously that was disappointing without question.”
Holmes workload has been reduced a bit, although his contribution on offense has been steady. But earlier in the season Holmes also returned punts. That job has been taken over by WR Jerricho Cotchery.
"The conditions were what they were and Santonio has a couple of nagging injuries (hip and toe)," Ryan said. "We feel very confident in Jericho back there right now."
Cotchery is the third wideout in the rotation, behind Holmes and Braylon Edwards. At the start of the season, as Holmes was suspended for the first four games, Cotchery and Edwards were the starters.
Holmes didn't practice last Wednesday due to turf toe, was limited Thursday and practiced fully on Monday. Ryan also mentioned a hip injury today on the conference call.
