Tye was inactive Sunday in the overtime win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, so his ouster doesn't come as a surprise. The Jets have Austin Seferian-Jenkins, Eric Tomlinson, Neal Sterling and rookie Jordan Leggett, who is battling a knee injury.
The Jets could use the roster spot for wide receiver Jalin Marshall, who is eligible to return from a four-game suspension. They have a one-week roster exemption, which means they have until next Monday to make a decision on Marshall, who can return punts and kickoffs.
The Jets claimed Tye on waivers from the New York Giants at the end of the preseason. With Seferian-Jenkins serving a two-game suspension, Tye played a big role on offense. In three games, he played 101 offensive snaps and caught four passes for 38 yards.
They also released running back Marcus Murphy from the practice squad.
