Boxer Riley to be freed after two years in jail

Light heavyweight Yathomas Riley was compiling an enviable record, successfully building his brand two years into his professional career, when fate took a turn over a cliff.

The Florida boxer was arrested in June 2010 by the Miami-Dade police after his then-girlfriend, Koketia King, was shot. Riley called 911 from her Homestead, Fla., apartment, according to the Miami New Times, telling a dispatcher that an unconscious King, the mother of their toddler, had tried to kill herself.

Her story was different: When she came to, she told cops that Riley tried to kill her. He disputed that, saying that she became despondent when he tried to leave her after discovering evidence that King, a state corrections officer, was filing fraudulent tax forms for inmates.

The Miami New Times story, written by Michael Miller, said that cops founds gunshot residue on King's hands, and not Riley's, and people rallied to Riley's defense. Folks like his pal Kevin Rooney Jr. -- who works as a publicist for New York promoter Lou DiBella and fought professionally the last few years -- spread the word that they thought Riley was getting a raw deal.

Today, Riley, and his family and friends, like Rooney, are overjoyed, as word is out that charges against Riley have been dropped. After two years in jail, he is almost free man. NYFightBlog received an email from the state attorney's office verifying that charges against Riley have been dropped, and his release is pending.

Riley (8-0 with 6 KOs) spoke to NYFightBlog on the phone at 2 p.m. Friday and said he is going to be released between 5-6 p.m.

"I'm going to have a little family time, with my father and brother and others, and then think about my career," he said.

Riley said he is near fighting weight, and wants to glove up before Christmas. He is still contracted to Star Boxing, he said. His lawyer, Kionne McGhee, contacted him Friday after the prosecutor informed the lawyer that all charges, including a felony attempted murder charge, were dropped.

Riley told me he will likely travel to New York next week to reunite with his current girlfriend, who lives in Westchester.
