PEDs are on everyone’s mind, as the OWN network prepares for a massive spike in vieweship before Lance Armstrong spills (semi spills?) his guts to Oprah on Thursday night. Cheating came up repeatedly last year in boxing, when Lamont Peterson, Andre Berto, Antonio Tarver and Erik Morales tested positive, and promoter Bob Arum touched on the issue on Wednesday, days away from his co-promotion at the Madison Square Garden Theater.
“The athletic commissions have to get together on procedures and testing,” the 81-year-old dealmaker said.
He said he doesn’t want to get caught in the middle, between testing organizations, like USADA and VADA, and the commissions, and the fighters. He supports random testing, but only under an umbrella shared by commissions. He thinks random testing makes sense for the biggest fights, and figures about $20,000 or so could be set aside for testing both boxers. "That's nothing," he said.
