Kidd: 'No nerves' for first preseason game

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Jason Kidd will coach his first preseason game on Tuesday night in D.C., when the Nets take on the Wizards at the Verizon Center.

"No, no nerves," Kidd said after Monday's practice at the PNY Center. "We've been working. It's just another day of camp. Some people look at camp being over in Duke, but for us, camp is everyday until the first regular-season game, so we're approaching it as camp. We'll get some work done in the morning, and then prepare for the game."

Kidd has not coached in a game since July 12, when the Nets wrapped up their six-game Summer League schedule with a loss to the Sixers in Orlando, Fla. He was adamant, though, that he's been coaching regularly since then.

"Understanding that this is the first game of the preseason, minutes are going to be low," Kidd said. "But for the guys when they take the floor, we're going to play our principles, play hard and just see some different combination out there as we go along."

Big-name newcomers Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Andrei Kirilenko will all make their Nets' debuts. Deron Williams will miss the game due to a sprained right ankle. Jason Terry (left knee) is also out.

Shaun Livingston is expected to start in D-Will's place, though Kidd noted that both Livingston and Tyshawn Taylor have been working with the first team, which also includes KG, Pierce, Brook Lopez and Joe Johnson.

"We're gonna see how that first group gets along without Deron, obviously," Kidd said. "But you gotta ... go with the guys who suit up."

Said Johnson: "It's gonna be great to get on the court and see what we've learned over this week or so and see if we can implement it in the game."

Even though he's not playing Terry said: "I can't wait to get on the plane right now. usually early in the season you're like, 'Damn, another plane trip?' But I was like 'Yeah let's get on the plane, man!'"

• On the injury front, Terry returned to contact practice, albeit on a limited basis. He hopes to get through an entire full contract practice Wednesday.

"He did a little bit more work today. We're getting closer to him getting a little bit more contact," Kidd said. "It's a process with him but again he got up and down today, and so hopefully we'll see how he feels tomorrow."

As for Williams, Kidd said his point guard remains day to day. "He was able to shoot some free throws and get some shots up. We'll see how he feels tomorrow," Kidd said.

Tornike Shengelia and Gary Forbes will also not play Tuesday night.

• Lopez said he weighs 290 pounds right now. He played at 275 last season, but expects to be at 280-285 this season.

"I definitely feel stronger," Lopez said.

• The Nets ended their huddle by yelling, "All in."

"That's how we are here: 'All in,'" Johnson said. "We're all here and we've all got each other's back."
