Nets CEO Brett Yormark tweeted that he’s excited about Sunday night’s game against the Atlanta Hawks because Brooklyn could tie the New York Knicks for the Atlantic Division lead with a victory. The Nets (38-27) enter play a half-game behind the Knicks (38-26).
But interim coach P.J. Carlesimo isn’t buying that storyline.
“I don’t care what the numbers say. You can’t be tied with somebody when you have one more loss than they do,” Carlesimo said. “It’s meaningless.”
Based on percentage points, Carlesimo is right. If the Nets win, their winning percentage would be .591. Meanwhile, the Knicks would have a .594 winning percentage.
But Nets fans, Knicks fans -- and Yormark for that matter -- would probably disagree.
Of course, in Carlesimo’s defense, there’s still plenty of season left.
