Scott Machado wins Haggerty Award

Iona guard Scott Machado has won the 79th Haggerty Award, given to the top Division I college basketball player in the New York area.

Machado, a senior, averaged 13.6 points and 9.9 assists per game this season for the Gaels, leading the nation in assists.

He was joined on the All-Metropolitan first team by St. John's forward Moe Harkless, Seton Hall guard Jordan Theodore, Seton Hall forward Herb Pope, Iona forward Mike Glover, and LIU Brooklyn forward Julian Boyd.

Harkless was named Rookie of the Year, and is headed to the NBA after just one season with the Red Storm.

Manhattan first-year coach Steve Masiello and Wagner coach Danny Hurley shared the Coach of the Year award. Hurley has since departed to take over at Rhode Island.
