Weatherford optimistic about new deal

Steve Weatherford said his agent had been talking to the Giants about a new contract but that both sides decided to wait until the Super Bowl was over.

Weatherford is a free agent but the punter said he expects to return. Weatherford was one of Jerry Reese's best moves of the season. The Giants kept the former Jet punter over Matt Dodge and Weatherford was rock solid if not spectacular at times this season.

He was terrific in the Super Bowl, landing three of his four punts inside the 10 and the other bounced into the end zone but could have been downed near the goal line.

"We've been talking for a while, but we haven't made any progress," Weatherford said. "We've tried to, though. We've kind of shelved negotiations until the Super Bowl's over. But it's something I think is a priority for both sides. We should get something done. I'm optimistic."
