The day after

Tom Coughlin said MLB Phillip Dillard has a hamstring injury and could be out for as long as a week although he classified the rookie under “a day-to-day thing.”

Dillard did not play last night against the Patriots, forcing Jonathan Goff to play a lot more than expected.

The workload ended up being a good thing as Goff got stronger as the game progressed. He had an interception and a huge tackle on the Giants’ goal-line stand at the end of the third quarter.

Coughlin praised Goff and LB Bryan Kehl’s play on defense.

Antrel Rolle was fined $7,500 by the NFL for his hit on Baltimore WR Mark Clayton in the Giants loss at Baltimore last weekend. The Giants safety was penalized under the new NFL rules which are installed to protect defenseless wide receivers.

Coughlin said RB Andre Brown injured his toe in practice last week and doctors decided before last night’s game to shut down the second-year back for perhaps up to two weeks to let the turf toe heal.

C Shaun O’Hara (ankle/Achilles) and CB Aaron Ross (plantar fasciitis) both sat out last night’s game as expected. Coughlin isn’t sure if he will have both back for practice on Monday.

But he likes the fact that the two injured players will have the entire weekend to heal even more.

“We have to wait and see,” Coughlin said. “We do have a nice stretch of a couple of days and they don’t have to work on Monday with us if that is what the doctors want so we can put a nice run of four or five days where they are both being treated.”

Coughlin praised backup QB Rhett Bomar for showing improvement throughout training camp. While he would like Bomar to cut down on the interceptions. Bomar passed for 171 yards, a touchdown and one interception.

Coughlin, though, did not rule out the possibility of looking for a veteran quarterback this weekend after teams make their roster cuts.

“I think you are always available to look at other options out there but there isn’t any question Rhett has improved,” Coughlin said.

Coughlin said TE Travis Beckum had an MRI on his neck and he hopes to have Beckum back next week… The head coach liked what he saw from running backs D.J. Ware and Gartrell Johnson. Ware rushed for 60 yards and Johnson added 50 yards as the offensive line opened up holes for the running backs… G Shawn Andrews said he feels stronger and is learning the offense better. Andrews had an impressive showing against the Patriots and Coughlin said the former Pro Bowl guard showed “power”… Coughlin said WR Mario Manningham did a nice job as a punt returner but the special teams needs to execute better in tackling on coverage and kickoff returns.
