Steppin' to the AM: Tom Coughlin's day off

The first break of camp is today as the Giants have the day off.

Of course, you know Tom Coughlin and the staff aren't taking the day off but it is a mandatory day off from practicing. So perhaps some of the players will feel like it's "Ferris Bueller's Day Off."

The break allows me to take some time to delve a little deeper into some of the best position battles of camp. Tune into the blog later today for my breakdown of the best camp battles and what some are saying about the position competitions. There will also be a video as well.

And, check out ESPNNewYork.com later for a story on Jacquian Williams and the linebackers unit competition. Jacquian says he wants to be that linebacker that doesn't come off the field. In my mind, he's the X-factor for the linebackers since his speed and athleticism can make him a three-down linebacker. Can he remain healthy?

In case you missed it: Corey Webster had some really refreshing comments on Tuesday. Webster doesn't talk often and when he does, he doesn't say much. But on Tuesday, he said that he will be ticked off if another NFC team makes the Super Bowl and uses their practice facility locker room -- the Giants facility will be the NFC representative home for the Super Bowl. Webster also said he believes he's still one of the best corners in the game. The Giants need him to have a bounce-back season.

The Giants tried Cullen Jenkins at defensive end a bit and some other personnel combos on Tuesday.

Tom Coughlin says Victor Cruz is knocking off some of the rust in practice.

Henry Hynoski hopes to be ready for the season opener. Still, the Giants may need to explore their options at fullback. Bear Pascoe has been playing in an H-back role so far.

The 411: No practice today. Giants go with full pads on Thursday.
