Fewell: Rodgers 'knocked us out'

The way Perry Fewell sees it, Aaron Rodgers flipped the script on the Giants defense.

“We’ve been knocking quarterbacks out and he knocked us out,” Fewell said.

Rodgers looked like Bart Starr in Lambeau last Sunday, completing 25 of 37 passes for 404 yards and four touchdowns in a 45-17 win against a Giants defense that knocked out six quarterbacks this season.

Four days after the fact, Fewell still seemed awestruck when he mentioned the Green Bay QB.

“We got a hold of a hot quarterback, he was extremely accurate, which we thought he would be and he was good that day,” Fewell said on Thursday.

A few weeks ago, Fewell’s defense looked like one of the better unit’s in the league. But in the last two weeks, well five quarters really, it has turned into an area of major concern. Its role in the team’s awfully-timed two-game losing streak can’t be ignored.

Fewell’s unit has allowed 73 points in the last 68 minutes, a ratio that would make Mike D’Antoni blush.

“We just haven’t played well for whatever reason. Last, we thought we prepared well. I thought we were ready to play, I thought we would perform well,” the coordinator said.

But they didn’t, allowing Green Bay to rack up 515 total yards and score points on five of their six possessions in the red zone. The Giants defense hasn’t been the same since Brent Celek beat Justin Tuck and Kenny Phillips for a 65-yard touchdown with 7:43 to go in the fourth quarter of the Eagles’ miracle at the Meadowlands two weeks ago.

Fewell was asked on Thursday to explain his defense’s fall from grace in the past five quarters.

“That’s a great question,” he said. “I can’t answer that question because if I could it wouldn’t happen.”

Fewell said that the Packers won the physical battle against Osi Umenyiora & Co. last Sunday. He knows that can't happen against the ‘Skins on Sunday.

“We’re trying to redeem ourselves, we’re trying to come back,” Fewell said. “We want to put a win on the board. We want to play much better now than how we’ve played.”
