New York Giants owner John Mara was among some owners who joined NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, NFLPA head DeMaurice Smith and players association officials on Wednesday in Chicago according to ESPN NFL insiders Chris Mortensen and Adam Schefter.
The two sides worked into the night to try to hammer out their differences one day before a scheduled hearing in St. Louis in front of the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals. Today is the 79th day of the lockout. Both sides will be in St. Louis tomorrow.
Mara has long argued that the owners and players association must return to the negotiating table and get out of the courts to broker a deal. Mara is one of the most respected voices in the NFL and here is his essay on the lockout and how to solve it.
Bottom line: Mara is right. Both sides must resume talks to broker a peace. Even if there's still a long ways to go before peace, talking is a good thing.
