Practice report: What's the 411?

Tom Coughlin and numerous players addressing the departure of Steve Smith to the Eagles before the team's 1:30 p.m. practice, and general manager Jerry Reese addressing the entire state of the Giants in a lengthy session with reporters after practice.

Keep checking back to the front page of ESPNNewYork.com for updated news stories from Ohm Youngmisuk on Reese's comments, as well as the reaction to Smith leaving Big Blue for Philadelphia.

As for what happened on the practice field on Thursday:

  • First of all, we were not treated to watching Osi Umenyiora ride a stationary bicycle on Thursday! The defensive end was in Atlanta, getting his left knee examined by a doctor. Reese said after practice that he hadn't received word yet on how Umenyiora's appointment went. He also said the team and Umenyiora are continuing to work through some contract issues, but he expects Umenyiora to play for the Giants this season.

  • Among the players sitting out Thursday's practice were linebacker Clint Sintim, wide receiver Domenik Hixon and tight end Travis Beckum.

Beckum had a good start to camp, but has sat out the past two days with a hamstring injury -- and Coughlin said he wasn't sure when Beckum will be able to return to action. That's bad news for the Giants, who desperately need someone to fill the void left by former starting tight end Kevin Boss, who signed with the Raiders last week.

Hixon missed all of last season with a knee injury, and the Giants are just being extra-cautious with him right now, resting him every other practice. Hixon said earlier on Thursday that he feels good, and expects to play in the Giants' first preseason game on Saturday night at Carolina.

  • Speaking of the preseason opener, Thursday's practice was the Giants' final one before their first game action of the season -- Friday is a travel day -- so the Giants did not practice in full pads.

As for what to expect on Saturday night, Coughlin said the plan is for the first-teamers to play 15-18 snaps against the Panthers, before handing things over to the backups. Most of the players we talked to on Thursday sounded excited to get into a game and see what happens.

Coughlin also said he plans to use three of the four quarterbacks on the roster (Eli Manning, Sage Rosenfels, David Carr, and Ryan Perrilloux) against Carolina.

Whoever doesn't play on Saturday night will definitely get a chance to play in the team's next preseason game -- on Mon., Aug. 22 at home against the Bears.
