Kenny Phillips is working his way back from microfracture surgery on his left knee.
Our camp preview continues with a look at the secondary.
Unit: Defensive backs
Depth Chart: (CB) Corey Webster, Terrell Thomas, Aaron Ross, Bruce Johnson, D.J. Johnson, Courtney Brown. (S) Kenny Phillips, Antrel Rolle, Deon Grant, Michael Johnson, Michael Greco, Seth Williams, Sha’reff Rashad, Chad Jones (injured).
On the Bubble: D. Johnson, Brown, Williams, Greco, Rashad.
Player to Watch: Rolle. The Giants signed the safety to five-year, $37-million deal in the offseason. Rolle could emerge as a vocal leader on the defense by the end of camp.
Wild Card: Phillips. If Phillips returns healthy after serious knee surgery last season, the Giants defense will have its best playmaker back. Expect Phillips to be extra cautious in camp and slowly work his way back.
Analysis: The Giants focused almost exclusively on defense in the offseason and safety was the biggest position to undergo reconstruction. GM Jerry Reese added veterans Rolle and Grant to upgrade the safety spot and provide insurance in case Phillips suffers a setback. If Phillips comes back healthy, the Giants will have one of the best safety tandems in the NFL with their University of Miami duo.
There are question marks at cornerback as well. Webster is looking to have a bounce-back season and Thomas and Ross will compete for the other starting spot.
Jones, the team’s third-round pick, will likely miss this season as he recovers from a car accident.
