Day 11 recap: Phillips and Umenyiora star

Day 11 is a wrap. Here’s some of the highlights from the afternoon session.

S Kenny Phillips got a lot more looks today in practice and he responded well. Working mostly two snaps at a time again, Phillips had one pass thrown his way while covering WR Derek Hagan. The pass was well underthrown but Phillips would have been there for the hit.

Later, Phillips tracked down a deep pass intended for WR Victor Cruz. It was Phillips’ first play of camp.

DE Osi Umenyiora had one of his strongest practices. In fact, on one play, he got into the backfield so fast and so deep that QB Jim Sorgi was unable to hand the ball off to RB Andre Brown.

The defense was loving it, howling their approval. Then Sorgi dropped back and threw a pass to WR Derek Hagan but Umenyiora would’ve probably gotten the sack working against the second team line.

Not long after the defense was glowing about Umenyiora’s moves, Rhett Bomar hit WR Duke Calhoun deep and T Jacob Bender celebrated by jumping up and down and screaming in response to the defense.

LB Gerris Wilkinson, who had an outside shot at the MLB job prior to Keith Bulluck’s arrival, tipped a pass intended for TE Bear Pascoe. The ball skimmed off Pascoe’s fingertips and into the hands of S John Busing for the INT.

RB Ahmad Bradshaw was in on the first snap for the offense but it was a passing play. RB Brandon Jacobs came in and got the first carry of the afternoon session.

RB D.J. Ware, competing with Brown for the third running back spot, dropped a short pass across the middle that hit him in the chest.

T David Diehl appeared to tweak his ankle following a play but seemed fine standing on the sideline with his teammates.

DT Dwayne Hendricks appeared to injure his knee. He got up slowly and was immediately examined by physicians on the sideline.

G Chris Snee (knee) did not practice as he got treatment. CB Corey Webster (glute), WR Steve Smith (groin), WR Sinorice Moss (groin), TEs Kevin Boss (hamstring/ankle), Travis Beckum (hamstring), Scott Chandler (hip), Jake Ballard (hamstring) and G Kevin Boothe (pectoral) did not practice as expected.
