Notebook: Coughlin explains Thomas move

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Coach Tom Coughlin said Terrell Thomas and Shaun Rogers were placed on season-ending injured reserve in the best interest of the two players and the team.

"We felt in the best interest of the player and the team that this is the direction that we should go with both Shaun Rogers and Terrell Thomas," Coughlin said. "We have to think in not only the long-term best interest of the player but of the club and exactly where we are at."

Coughlin would not elaborate on Thomas' medical condition. The cornerback, who re-aggravated his twice-repaired right ACL early in camp, had hoped to return sometime this season to play without needing surgery.

The Giants could have designated him as their temporary injured reserve player who can come off IR after eight weeks starting next Tuesday (here is all you need to know about the new IR rule).

But in order to do that, the Giants would have had to keep Thomas on the active roster on Friday. By placing Thomas and Rogers on IR Friday, the Giants ended their seasons, with the thought that the two would not be able to help this year. Thomas will now miss two full seasons in a row on IR due to his ACL.

Coughlin said he has not decided if he will use the temporary IR slot, or who he would use it on. He said defensive tackle Marvin Austin could potentially play by Week 2, so it sounds as if the Giants could hold onto the slot and use it later in the season.

Roster moves: The Giants waived guard Mitch Petrus on Saturday after being awarded offensive tackle D.J. Jones off waivers from the Eagles. Petrus struggled in the final preseason game and the Giants are adding Jones for depth at tackle with Will Beatty and James Brewer having dealt with back issues this preseason.

The Giants also brought back several players who were cut on Friday. Offensive linemen Selvish Capers, Matt McCants and Stephen Goodin, cornerback Laron Scott, defensive ends Matt Broha and Craig Marshall, wide receiver David Douglas and tight end Larry Donnell are back on the practice squad.
