McKee/SI Tech needed all 32 minutes of Sunday's game to come away with the Public Schools Athletic League "Cup" division title.
A 26-yard touchdown pass with no time remaining from Thomas Ferranola to Charles D'onigbinde won the Seagulls the game as No. 1 MSIT defeated No. 2 South Shore, 20-14, on Sunday. The Seagulls (11-0) won defended their "Cup" title while beating South Shore (9-2) for the second time this season.
"It was a tremendous game," MSIT coach Anthony Cialdella said. "They were a tough team to play."
He later added: "The way we won was just sweet."
MSIT faced a fourth-and-goal at the 26-yard line with three seconds left in the game and the two teams tied at 14-14. The Seagulls ran a play they call "verticals" but Ferranola underthrew D'onigbinde. The running back had to come back to the ball but somehow made the catch and ran in the final three yards to win the championship.
"I couldn't believe it, I was in shock," Cialdella said. "I was asking if that really happened."
For the first time this season, MSIT trailed in this game as South Shore led 8-6 going into the half. Cialdella said his players actually had a shocked look on their faces as they headed to the lockeroom at the half.
The Seagulls rebounded to take a 14-8 lead before South Shore later went on to tie the game late. Cialdella credited South Shore for their play as the two teams had met earlier this season and MSIT won in a blowout.
He was also proud of how his team handle a situation where it trailed. Cialdella credited Fernando Salomons with having a great game as a free safety and a wide receiver as well as Ferranola.
"We hadn't faced this type of adversity in a game all season," Cialdella said. "It was great to see them respond the way they did today."
