After another lengthy layoff between games, the Rangers are back in action tonight at the Garden, playing host to the Montreal Canadiens. Here are three things to watch for when the action starts.
The Men in the Masks
Henrik Lundqvist will almost certainly get the nod for what will be his 968th consecutive start (or thereabouts). That should set up an interesting duel with crease counterpart Carey Price. The two netminders have combined for 17 shutouts this season, with Lundqvist just ahead with nine donuts to Price’s eight.
The last time the Rangers matched up with the Habs it appeared to me that Montreal D Hal Gill wasn’t exactly greased lightning on the ice. Though he’s a mountain of a man, Gill also moves like one these days, and the Rangers skaters should be on the lookout for opportunities to torch him down the boards. Ryan Callahan, Mats Zuccarello and Marian Gaborik in particular could take advantage of the aging blueliner’s rusty wheels.
Feel the Power
The Rangers scored three PP goals against the Islanders and will look to keep that success going Friday night. On the flip side, they’ll be trying to tighten up a PK that’s allowed goals in consecutive games and six on 21 chances in March. Montreal features the seventh best power play in the league.
