Rangers sign defenseman Bell

The New York Rangers signed free agent defenseman Brendan Bell, the team announced Tuesday. Bell, 28, played in the Swiss A-League last season.

The defenseman has played 101 career games with Ottawa, Phoenix and Toronto, scoring seven goals, 21 assists and 51 penalty minutes. His best season came in 2008-09, when he scored six goals and tallied 15 assists. Toronto originally drafted him in the third round of the 2001 Draft.

Most of Bell's career has been spent in the AHL as he has played 374 games in the league. In those games, with Syracuse, Peoria, Binghamton, San Antonio and Toronto/St. John's, he has 46 goals and 152 assists.

Last season, with EHC Biel of the Swiss A-League, Bell had two goals and nine assists in 29 games. He also played one game with the Omsk Avangard of the KHL.

This move appears to be for depth, but in the best-case scenario, Bell could possibly earn his way onto the third defense line.
