What it Means: Fueled by a strong performance from goaltender Johan Hedberg and David Clarkson's first-period power-play goal, the Devils shut out the Islanders 1-0 at the Prudential Center.
The Islanders spent the waning minutes in regulation like they did much of the game -- down a man.
Ryan Strome earned himself a boarding major and a game misconduct for his hit on Stephen Gionta at 16:46 of the third.
No Nino? Isles 2010 first-round pick Nino Niederreiter suffered a groin injury late in the first period. The 19-year-old Swiss winger appeared on the bench for the second period, but lasted only nine seconds in his first shift back before heading off to the trainer’s room. The former fifth overall pick is projected to make the Islanders out of camp and get the chance to play on the team’s first line with Matt Moulson and John Tavares.
“Hed” of the Class: Unlike his last start, when he was shelled in the Devils’s 6-2 loss to the Islanders last Saturday, Hedberg was terrific Friday in Newark. He was barely tested in the first period, but went on to stop all 16 shots he faced.
Trigger-shy: The Islanders did not register a shot on goal until almost 14 minutes into play. Hedberg did not have to make a stop until 13:56 in the first period and faced only three more in the first frame.
Penalty Prone: In an undisciplined effort that had them spending much of the night in the penalty box, the Islanders gave the Devils six power-play opportunities over the first two periods, seven in total.
Injury Update: Isles D Andrew MacDonald (hip surgery) is likely to make his preseason debut Saturday against the Bruins. Devils D Bryce Salvador (hip/groin) is expected to play Saturday against the Flyers; F Dainius Zubrus is also a possibility.
