Staal on IR, Erixon recalled, Avery assigned

Rangers defenseman Marc Staal has been officially placed on injured reserve with post-concussion headaches.

He is eligible to come off IR on Oct. 12, but it appears unlikely he will be ready to play any time soon.

Staal, 24, has yet to practice fully or scrimmage with the Rangers since training camp began.

The Rangers recalled Swedish defensive prospect Tim Erixon from the AHL's Connecticut Whale. Erixon will fly to Sweden to join the team before the regular-season opener against the Kings on Friday.

Erixon, 20, finished with two assists, a plus-3 rating and 10 penalty minutes in give preseason games for the Rangers this year.

Sean Avery, who was waived Tuesday, has been assigned to the Connecticut Whale.

According to his agent Pat Morris, Avery has already garnered interest from some European teams, but they'll wait to see what the Rangers would like to do with him moving forward.

"It's a mutuality," Morris told ESPNNewYork.com. "Sean's open to playing wherever the Rangers want him to play, whether that's down in Hartford or over in Europe."
