WHAT IT MEANS: The Devils allowed a season-high six goals and were throttled by the Avalanche on Wednesday night in Colorado. New Jersey has now lost two straight games and fell to 12-10-1 overall.
TURNING IT OVER: Adam Henrique’s turnover in the right circle led to Milan Hejduk’s goal, which opened the scoring at 7:37 of the first. Then T.J. Galiardi made it 2-0 at 14:14 after Henrik Tallinder couldn’t handle a pass behind the net.
KOVY: Ilya Kovalchuk scored his third goal in eight career games against Colorado at 11:03 of the second. Zach Parise picked up a secondary assist on the marker. It was Parise’s first assist on a Kovalchuk goal since the two were paired together on the same line (nine games).
UNACCEPTABLE: The Devils’ power play gave up their NHL-worst sixth shorthanded goal in the third period to Jay McClement.
THE REPLACEMENT: Andy Greene was hurt so Mark Fraser dressed in his place on defense.
BOLT BACK: Eric Boulton returned to the lineup for the first time since Oct. 21 after being out with a hand injury. The left winger skated on the checking line with Tim Sestito and Cam Janssen.
UP NEXT: Devils at Wild, Friday night, 8 p.m.
