Elias fined $2,500 for Blunden hit

Veteran Patrik Elias was fined $2,500 for his hit Thursday on Montreal's Mike Blunden during the first period of the Devils 5-3 win over the Canadiens.

Elias, who received a minor boarding penalty on the play, said he was notified by his former teammate, league disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan, of the fine via telephone conversation Friday.

"I talked to him and he explained why. The way he looked at it, what

he had an issue with was my follow-through," Elias said. "I get it."

Elias, who played with Shanahan in New Jersey, suspected his

reputation as a clean player probably helped him to escape further

discipline.

"He knows me. He played with me. He knows I'm not a dirty player," Elias said.

With the Devils already decimated on defense, coach Pete DeBoer said he was relieved his leading scorer avoided suspension. Elias, 35, has 18 goals and 30 assists in 49 games for the Devils this season.

"With where we're at, that's the last thing we need," he said. "He can afford the fine, too."

The $2,500 is the maximum allowed, per the rules of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. The money will go to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.
