Petrov may yet join Isles

Hope still remains that touted Russian prospect Kirill Petrov may still join the Islanders this season. Though Petrov’s KHL team, Ak Bars, took the ice for their season opener yesterday, Petrov was not in the lineup according to NYI Point Blank’s Chris Botta.

The third-round pick from 2008 was thought to owe two more seasons to his KHL club, but a source tells Botta that a deal may be made to bring the 6-3 right wing over before the puck drops on the 2010-11 NHL season.

Though Petrov has impressed in international competition, including the World Junior Championships, and made a mark at the Isles' mini-camp this summer, Petrov has struggled with his KHL team and, according to Botta, was held out of several preseason games. It could be his uncertain status with Ak Bars that's triggering the possibility of an early arrival in Long Island. Hockey’s Future rates Petrov as the fourth-highest prospect in the Isles organization.

"They inquired. They called, we had some discussions. They had to get to the floor, obviously. We had a number of calls of that type of nature, with teams that would have been interested if we were interested in a specific kind of contract. Our objection going in was to put Kovy in one place for the remainder of his career."

  • Though the news broke a little while back, MSG+ has officially announced Butch Goring will be the color commentator for the Isles’ 2010-11 season.
