Rex Ryan, attending the LSU pro day Thursday in Baton Rouge, addressed the Tim Tebow trade for the first time. While in town on his scouting trip, Ryan was "Tebowed" by two patrons in a local restaurant, according to CBSSports.com. Tebow-mania follows you everywhere, apparently.
Ryan commented on the quarterback situation, claiming Mark Sanchez is No. 1.
"Mark's a great competitor. I know that about Mark. Mark is our starting quarterback. There's no doubt about it. Will we have some things for Tebow each week? Absolutely," Ryan said, according to CBSSports.com.
Ryan was asked if he ever envisioned a quarterback competition between Sanchez and Tebow.
"I look at it this way: We're incredibly fortunate to have a couple of quarterbacks with playoff wins," he said. "Obviously, both have been fairly successful. ... I think he's (Sanchez) going to be a tremendous quarterback. He is our quarterback. ... What Tim gives us is another great competitor."
Ryan was asked about Antonio Cromartie's pre-trade tweet, saying he didn't want Tebow. (Actually, he tweeted that again immediately after the trade, but recanted Thursday when he tweeted that he'd welcome Tebow to the team.)
"The good thing about us is that we don't hide anything," Ryan said. "Everybody's got there beliefs. This team is built around each other, including Cromartie."
Ryan had a funny story to tell about how the trade went down.
"I was flying out here to do this (LSU) pro day, and I thought the deal was done," he said. "Turned out there was some other issues involved. Ten hours later, I got a text saying, 'Hey, we got him again.' ... He (GM Mike Tannenbaum) is incredibly prepared for everything."
